School is in full swing and I am having soooo much fun sharing reading lessons with Pre-K through 6th grade. This week for the little guys, the idea was that "we are all readers" and that even though they might not be able to read the words, they can 'read' the pictures and put words to the story. We started out with a riviting game of pictionary, then we 'read' a picture book about a mama duck looking for a lost ducking, and finally we handed out a little book to each student and gave them time to 'read' their story. For many, I think it was one of the first times that they had done that and they were so excited.... not screaming, running around excited, but a kind of subtle, swelling-up-inside-of-you excited pride that spilled out of their eyes and curled their lips up into smiles.
When it was time to head home, I was walking behind 2 kinder students, their moms, and several brothers and sisters. When they turned around and noticed me one said "Mom!! That's the teacher that is going to teach us how to read!!"
